Women’s Soccer Shuts Out New Haven on Senior Day

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – In its final non-conference game of the regular season, the Molloy women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over the Chargers of the University of New Haven, Wednesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. With the win, the Lions improve to 9-4-2 on the season, while the Chargers move to 3-9-4.
 
Prior to the start of the contest, the program celebrated its senior, Alessandra Borsellino (biology).
 
How it Happened
  • Seven minutes into the contest, sophomore Olivia Ingenito generated a chance inside the 18-yard box with a shot that went just wide of the far post.
  • New Haven had its first two chances in the 15th and 17th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz made a pair of saves to keep them off the board.
  • The Lions created two chances 1:17 apart eight minutes later. Sophomore Isabella Muro fired a shot that was saved and Ingenito had her chance get denied by New Haven goalkeeper Caitlin Daley.
  • In the 30th minute, Muro had two golden chances to crack the scoreboard. Her first attempt was denied from point blank range and her second attempt was sent just high of the cross bar.
  • Six minutes later, Molloy broke through. Muro found freshman Bella Juliano who struck a shot into the top left corner of the net to put Molloy on top, 1-0.
  • With 50 seconds remaining in the half, Borsellino was awarded a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. The senior fired her chance, but the shot would go high, sending the contest into halftime with Molloy ahead, 1-0.
  • Coming into the second half, New Haven had its first chance 2:15 in with a shot that went wide of target.
  • In the 50th and 51st minute, exactly one minute apart the Lions looked for its insurance goal. Sophomore Madison Keenan had her header attempt go high and Muro saw her shot get saved.
  • 10 minutes would go by before the road team would generate its next chance, but Muñoz would deny the chance keep the Lions in front, 1-0.
  • In the 66th minute, the cardinal and white would find its insurance goal. Freshman Sarah Cavallo took a feed from freshman Madison Falkowski and fired it into the back of the net to extend the lead, 2-0.
  • Molloy would hold the opponent without a shot for the remainder of the contest to secure the victory, 2-0.
Top Performances
  • Juliano netted her first collegiate goal.
  • Cavallo tallied her second goal of the season.
  • Muro tallied her fourth assist of the year and Falkowski picked up her first collegiate helper.
  • In goal, Muñoz made three saves to collect her sixth shutout of the season.

Molloy will conclude the regular season Saturday, November 2 as they travel to take on Queens College in Flushing. Kick-off is set for 11:00 a.m.
