Women's Soccer Tops Staten Island, 3-1

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team picked up its fifth consecutive East Coast Conference win Wednesday evening, defeating the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, 3-1, at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 7-4-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while the Dolphins move to 0-10-3 overall and 0-6-1 in league play.

How it Happened
  • 8:50 into the contest, junior Mikaela Barriga buried a goal off a feed from freshman Sarah Cavallo to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • Cavallo looked to score four minutes later, but her attempt was saved by Dolphins goalkeeper Oksana Zahirna.
  • After being awarded a free kick in the 16th minute, the Dolphins tied the game at one. Caitlyn Thompson took the free kick that landed on goal and following a scrum inside the six-yard box, Jenna Como netted a goal to knot the contest.
  • Over the next 15 minutes of action the cardinal and white upped its pressure totaling four shots. Two shots missed target while the final two were denied keeping the game tied.
  • The cardinal and white struck in the final two minutes of the opening half. Junior Olivia Ingenito made a run down the right side and fired a shot that was saved off the cross bar and freshman Madison Falkowski was there to clean up the rebound and score to put Molloy ahead, 2-1, heading into halftime.
  • Coming into the second half the Lions searched for its insurance goal quickly, totaling three shots in the opening 10 minutes, but only one was on target that was saved.
  • In the 62nd minute, Ingenito had a golden chance to score beating the defender inside the box to set up her shot, but her attempt rang off the crossbar to keep the contest within on goal.
  • Seven minutes later, Molloy would get the insurance goal they were in search of. Cavallo sent in a ball from the left side of the box and found a wide-open sophomore Isabella Muro who smoked it into the back of the net to give Molloy a two-goal cushion, 3-1.
  • The cardinal and white would not surrender a shot in the second half and would go on to finish off the victory, 3-1.
