Women’s Soccer Nets Five Goals in Victory at STAC

Sparkill, N.Y. – With goals from five different Lions, the Molloy women's soccer team defeated the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Lions improve to 6-4-2 overall and 4-0 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans move to 3-6-3 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • Molloy wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, netting the game's first in the opening 20 seconds off the foot of junior Mikaela Barriga.
  • 11 minutes into the contest, Barriga looked for her second tally of the afternoon, but was denied by Spartans goalkeeper, Catalena Robson.
  • The Spartans generated its first chance in the 16th minute, but sophomore Elyse Muñoz was there to make a save.
  • Seven minutes later, St. Thomas Aquinas looked for the equalizer but once again it would be Muñoz to deny the chance.
  • In the 36th minute, Molloy extended its lead, 2-0, when sophomore Madison Keenan found freshman Sarah Cavallo for the goal.
  • 1:16 later, the cardinal and white would find the back of the net again, this time off the foot of junior Olivia Ingenito to open a three-goal advantage, 3-0.
  • St. Thomas would have its final chance of the opening 45 minutes in the 41st minute, but Muñoz made her third save of the contest sending the game into halftime with Molloy in front, 3-0.
  • The Lions began the first half quickly, netting its fourth goal in the 52nd minute from freshman Jana Strait to add to its lead, 4-0.
  • In the 65th minute, the home team cracked the scoreboard to cut the deficit to three, 4-1, off the foot of Amalie Steen.
  • Molloy netted its fifth and final goal of the contest in the 73rd minute. Senior Alessandra Borsellino found Keenan who netted the goal to seal the victory, 5-1.
Top Performances
  • Keenan paced the team with four points (one goal and two assists).
  • Cavallo netted her first goal of her career.
  • Barriga, Strait, and Ingenito tallied a goal each.
  • Borsellino and Muro handed out one assist apiece.
  • In goal, Muñoz made a season-high eight saves.
