Moore Sets Single Game Assist Record in Critical Women’s Basketball Win

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Junior floor general Janel Moore dished out a single-game record 14 assists Sunday afternoon as the Molloy women's basketball team defeated the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University, 85-73, inside Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions, whose winning streak sits at five games, improve to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Redhawks move to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The teams traded baskets in the opening 4:38 of action, but a three-point play from senior Trinity Hudson gave the Lions a 7-6 lead.
  • Following the free throw, Molloy rallied to a 8-0 run over the next 2:12 of play to open a nine-point lead, 15-6, with over two minutes left in the first quarter. Junior Samantha Muller drained a three-point basket as time expired in the quarter giving the Lions a 24-14 lead going into second.
  • The Redhawks started the second stanza red hot from the floor, putting together a 21-3 rally while holding the Lions to one field goal to flip the momentum and the lead in its favor, 35-27, with 3:13 to play in the first half.
  • The cardinal and white however would respond and end the opening half on a 9-2 run to come within one, 37-36, heading into halftime.
  • Entering the third quarter, the teams returned to going back and forth, but the visiting team knotted the contest at 45 following a jumper with over five minutes to play in the third.
  • Over the next four minutes of action the contest would stay within one possession, as neither team would give the opposition room to breathe.
  • Moore would sink a pair of layups in the final minute of the quarter and send the Lions into the final stanza ahead, 59-58.
  • In the first 1:28 of the fourth, the Redhawks put together a 7-0 run to take a six-point lead, 65-59.
  • Once again, the Lions would fight back, compiling a 11-2 run headlined by senior Trinity Hudson who netted seven points to take a 70-67 lead with 5:16 remaining.
  • 30 seconds later, the road team would tie the contest at 70 following a three-point field goal from Emily Palmer.
  • With the score tied at 70, Muller and Hudson drained a pair of foul shots each and Moore sunk a layup to reestablish the lead, 76-70, with under three minutes to go.
  • Roberts Wesleyan cut the lead in half, 76-73, following three consecutive free throws with 2:29 remaining on the scoreboard.
  • Molloy would seal the game in the final 2:29, shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line and holding the Redhawks 0-of-6 from the field to go on and seal the victory, 85-73. 
Top Performances
  • Hudson led all scorers with 25 points while securing 15 rebounds to collect her sixth straight double-double, bringing her total to 11 on the season.
  • Muller netted a career-high 24 points while shooting 47 percent from the field.
  • Graduate student Isabel Sanchez tallied 14 points and brought down eight rebounds.
  • On top of her record setting 14 assists, Moore added 12 points and three steals.
