Late Defense and Free Throw Shooting Lead Women’s Basketball Past AIC

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Accounting for 34 points between senior Trinity Hudson and junior Janel Moore, the Molloy women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four, with a 56-55 victory over the Yellow Jackets of American International College Thursday evening inside Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 7-8 overall, while the Yellow Jackets move to 10-6 overall on the campaign.

How it Happened
  • The teams traded baskets in the opening 3:30 of action, but a three-point field goal from Moore gave the Lions a 6-5 lead.
  • Molloy extended its lead to six, 11-5, off three free throws from Hudson and a bucket from junior Samantha Muller and would take a nine-point lead, 19-10, into the second quarter.
  • After a three-point basket from Hudson to begin the second stanza, AIC collected a 7-0 run to come within five, 22-17, with over seven minutes to go in the half.
  • The cardinal and white responded with a run of its own, rallying to an 11-0 clip with four different scorers to take a commanding, 33-17, lead with 2:13 remaining in the quarter.
  • Hudson capped the half with a lay-up as the Lions took a 14-point lead, 35-21, into halftime.
  • Coming out of the locker room, the two teams went back and forth, but a mini 5-0 run off a jumper from junior Danielle Hippner and a three-point basket from graduate student Isabel Sanchez opened Molloy's largest lead of the game, 47-29, with under four minutes to play in the third quarter.
  • The road team would take the Lions best shot and fire its own back, as they responded with a 14-0 run to end the quarter, holding the home team 0-for-5 from the field, and forcing three turnovers. Molloy led, 47-43, going into the final stanza.
  • The run continued into the fourth, as AIC drained a three 19 seconds into the final quarter to come within one, 47-46.
  • Hudson answered with the Lions only field goal of the stanza, to extend the lead to three, 49-46, with over eight minutes remaining.
  • The next four total points would come from the foul line with the cardinal and white holding onto a five-point advantage, 52-47, with 7:35 left on the scoreboard.
  • Over the next three minutes of action, Yellow Jackets forward Briana Lee netted four points to close the deficit to one, 52-51, with over four minutes left on the clock.
  • The next 2:25 of play was a defensive battle, as the teams combined to shoot 1-of-6 from the floor, sending the contest into a free throw shooting showdown.
  • The Lions shot 4-of-6 from the charity stripe, while the Yellow Jackets shot 2-of-3 including coming within one, 56-55, following a free throw with two minutes to go.
  • The contest came down to the final possession. Following a Molloy missed free throw, AIC grabbed the rebound, sprinted up court, and got a good look for the game winner, but it would eventually rattle in and out sending the Lions home the victors, 56-55.
