Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Holding the Queens College Knights to 12 points in the second half, the Molloy women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2024 calendar year, 61-36, over the visitors Wednesday evening at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights move to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in league play.
How it Happened
- Molloy opened the contest on an 8-0 rally, shooting 3-of-4 from the field, led by graduate student Isabel Sanchez, who netted four points.
- Queens College responded with a 8-0 run of its own, with baskets coming from four different scorers, to knot the contest at eight with 2:28 left in the opening stanza.
- A three-point basket from sophomore Sophia Yearwood to close the first quarter pushed the Lions in front, 15-11, heading into the second.
- After a pair of free throws from sophomore Colleen McCullagh, Queens compiled a 8-2 run while forcing four turnovers to bring the contest all square at 19 with under five minutes remaining in the first half.
- The final three points of the half for the Lions came from junior Samantha Muller, but the home team trailed, 24-22, heading into halftime.
- The road team came out of the locker room quickly, extending the lead to five, 29-24, 1:19 into the third quarter.
- Over the next four minutes of action, the cardinal and white shot 3-of-3 from the field and 1-of-1 from three-point range to even the game at 33 with 4:29 left in the third stanza.
- The Lions closed the third quarter on an 8-0 rally, paced by senior Trinity Hudson who netted six points to give Molloy an eight-point lead, 41-33, heading into the final quarter.
- Molloy would outscore Queens 20-3 in the final stanza, shooting 60 percent from the field, causing six turnovers, and holding the Knights to one field goal and close out the victory, 61-36.
Top Performances
- Hudson led all scorers with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to collect her eighth double-double of the season.
- Junior Danielle Hippner blocked a career-high eight shots to go along with 11 points and nine rebounds.
- Junior Samantha Muller and Yearwood added eight points each.
