Tappeto’s Free Kick Brings Women’s Soccer to Draw with Roberts Wesleyan

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – A 35-yard free kick goal from senior Sarah Tappeto gave the Molloy women's soccer team a result Tuesday evening, drawing with the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan, 1-1, at John A. Darcy Field. Molloy moves to 3-2-4 overall and 2-0-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Redhawks move to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The opening 10 minutes saw one chance for each team, but neither offense could muster a shot on target.
  • In the 12th minute, graduate student Caitlin Kennedy had the first shot on target that was saved by Redhawks goalkeeper Nicolette Knauf.
  • Seven minutes later, the road team generated its first shot on target that was denied by freshman Elyse Muñoz.
  • The Lions looked to break the scoreboard 21:54 into the contest, but sophomore Olivia Ingenito saw her shot stopped.
  • The best chance for the cardinal and white happened in the 32nd minute, when freshman Isabella Muro sent a cross to the far post looking for freshman Edith Vanegas. But the chance was sent wide of the far post keeping Molloy off the scoreboard.
  • Roberts Wesleyan took advantage of a mistake by the Lions defense in the 43rd minute, Kaeleigh Romero corralled a loose ball and scored into an open net with Muñoz off her line to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Following a foul in the 54th minute the Lions won a free kick from straight away 35 yards away, Tappeto hovered over the ball and struck it into the top right corner over the outstretched arm of the Roberts Wesleyan goalkeeper to tie the contest at one.  
  • The Lions looked for the goal ahead goal with a pair of chances in the 61st and 67th minute, but freshmen Victoria Bustamante and Isabella Muro at their shots blocked.
  • In the 68th minute, Tappeto had another opportunity with a free kick, this time from 30 yards away. But her attempt was this time stopped by the Redhawks goalkeeper, keeping the game knotted at one.
  • The road team generated a chance in the in the 75th minute, but Muñoz made a save to deny the go-ahead goal opportunity.
  • The Redhawks had it last chance to score in the 86th minute, Romero streaked down the left side and fired a shot at the far post that went wide.
  • The 89th minute saw the Lions have its last chance, when Tappeto was able to make a run into the 18-yard box, but her chance was deflected high as the game would end in a 1-1 draw. 
Top Performances
  • Tappeto netted her third goal of the season while pacing the team with three shots with two coming on goal.
  • Ingenito and Kennedy tallied two shots and two shots on goal.
  • In goal, Muñoz made three saves
Up Next
The Lions will now have a week to recover and prepare for Georgian Court as they welcome the Lions to Rockville Centre Wednesday, October 4. The non-conference matchup is set for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
