Flushing, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Knights of Queens College (16-10 and 7-5) Saturday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium. The Lions improved to 21-11 overall and 9-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights moved to 19-8 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 16, Queens 10
- After a scoreless first inning, graduate student Jake McCarthy put Molloy on the scoreboard with an RBI to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Lions opened the game up in the fifth inning, junior Garrett Scavelli singled home a run, junior Aidan Larking reached on a fielder's choice that scored two runs, junior Gavin McAlonie drove an opposite field run scoring single, junior Matt Yip tallied two RBI with a single, and sophomore JJ DeVito capped the eight-run inning with a two-RBI single to push the Lions in front, 9-0.
- Queens took the haymaker and threw one right back, responding in the bottom of the inning with six runs of its own to cut the deficit to three, 9-6.
- The cardinal and white put another crooked number on the scoreboard in the seventh, adding seven runs to its total. Graduate student Chris Peralta led off the inning with a home run, DeVito drove in two runs with a single, McAlonie singled home a run, Larkin scored off a double steal, and McCarthy solidified the inning with a two-RBI single to take a commanding, 16-6, lead.
- The home team answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs off a double to stay within grasp, 16-9.
- Queens added one run in the ninth inning, but Molloy would close out the victory and win game one, 16-10.
- DeVito led the team with four RBI while totaling two hits and two walks.
- McCarthy tallied two hits and drove in three runs.
- Scavelli, McAlonie, Manisero, and graduate student Robby Keane added two hits each.
- Graduate student Mike Andreoli tossed 4.1 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, five hits, and struck out four.
- Sophomore Jason Schwartz completed the fifth throwing 0.2 innings to pick up his first win of his collegiate career.
- Junior Timmy Mott tossed three innings out of the bullpen allowing one unearned run and struck out three to pick up his first save of his Molloy career.
Game Two: Molloy 7, Queens 5
- The Lions opened game two with a pair of runs in the opening inning. McAlonie scored a run with an RBI ground out and junior Anthony Manisero singled to put Molloy ahed, 2-0.
- Queens responded in the bottom of the opening frame with an RBI double to cut the Lions' lead in half, 2-1.
- In the top of the second, Scavelli connected for a two-run home run to extend Molloy's lead, 4-1.
- The Knights rallied for four unanswered runs, scoring two in the third and fourth to pull in front, 5-4.
- The cardinal and white snapped the run with two runs crossing the plate in the top of the fifth. McCarthy reached on an error that scored a run and junior Chris Giardino singled to score the go ahead run to reclaim the lead, 6-5.
- The Lions added an insurance run in the seventh following a sacrifice fly from Peralta and would go on to sweep the doubleheader, 7-5.
- Manisero led the squad collecting four hits and driving in a run.
- Giardino totaled three hits.
- Scavelli blasted his fourth home run of the season, drove in two runs, and scored two runs.
- Freshman Sean Welsh pitched four innings allowing five hits, five runs, and punched out four.
- Senior Richard Gennaro threw three scoreless innings in relief and struck out five to pick up his second win of the campaign.
