Morrisey Goes The Distance; Baseball Defeats Queens, 5-3

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball wrapped up a four-game series with the Queens College Knights Monday afternoon triumphing, 5-3, at Mitchel Field. The Lions improved to 22-11 overall and 10-2 in ECC play, while the Knights moved to 19-9 overall and 4-4 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, Molloy tallied three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Gavin McAlonie scored following an error, graduate student Jake McCarthy singled home a run, and junior Matt Yip recorded a run scoring sacrifice fly to put the Lions in front, 3-0.
  • Queens responded in the top of the third, scoring a pair of runs following a run scoring single and a run scoring double to come within one, 3-2.
  • In the fifth inning, sophomore JJ DeVito scored following a fielder's choice to extend the Lions' lead, 4-2.
  • The cardinal and white tacked on a fifth run in the seventh inning off a sacrifice fly from McAlonie to reclaim its three-run lead, 5-2.
  • Queens threatened for a big inning in the top of the eighth. After scoring a run off a RBI single the Knights had the tying run at first and the go ahead run at the plate, but graduate student induced a ground out to get out of the jam, to keep the score at 5-3.
  • Morrisey pitched a perfect ninth inning to complete the victory, 5-3.
Top Performances
  • Morrisey pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, three runs, and struck out three to improve to 4-2 on the campaign.
  • DeVito collected two hits and scored two runs.
  • Yip tallied two hits and an RBI.
  • McCarthy and McAlonie drove in a run each.
Up Next
The Lions will return to the diamond Friday, April 14 to begin a four-game series with in conference rival Saint Thomas Aquinas. First pitch from Mitchel Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
