Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team began a four-game series with the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College Friday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions triumphed, 11-3, and now sit at 23-11 overall and 11-2 in ECC play, while the Spartans moved to 15-16 overall and 9-4 in league play.
How it Happened
- After a scoreless first inning, Molloy tallied three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Matt Yip drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, sophomore JJ DeVito singled home a run, and junior Garrett Scavelli drove in a run with a single to put the Lions in front, 3-0.
- The bats stayed hot in the third inning, graduate student Jake McCarthy ripped a double down the left field line to score two runs and scored following an RBI single from Robby Keane to extend the Molloy lead, 6-0.
- The cardinal and white tacked on a run in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly from junior Anthony Manisero to stay in front, 7-0.
- After surrendering a run to the road team in the top of the eighth, Molloy responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a two-RBI single from Manisero to take a commanding, 11-1, lead.
- The Spartans totaled two runs in the top of the ninth as the Lions would go on to take game one, 11-3.
Top Performances
- Senior Charlie Cucchiara pitched a complete game allowing three runs on eight hits and struck out seven to improve to 5-3 on the season.
- Manisero totaled two hits, two runs scored, and three RBI.
- McCarthy tallied two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.
- Scavelli and DeVito added two hits and one RBI each.
