Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team began a four-game series with the Knights of Queens College Thursday afternoon, falling to the visitors, 8-5, at Mitchel Field. The Lions moved to 19-11 overall and 7-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights improved to 19-6 overall and 4-1 in league play.
How it Happened
- Queens opened the scoring in the first inning with a run crossing the plate via ground out to take a 1-0 lead.
- The road team added two runs in the second inning off a pair of RBI doubles to increase its lead, 3-0.
- The Knights added two more runs in the fourth to extend its lead, 5-0.
- The Lions got one back in the sixth when junior Garrett Scavelli belted a solo home run over the left field fence to get Molloy on the scoreboard, 5-1.
- Queens answered with a run in the top of the seventh to retake its five-run lead, 6-1.
- Molloy struck for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Tom Lebrecht walked home a run to set the table for Scavelli, who cleared the bases with a double into the left center to bring the Lions within one, 6-5.
- The Knights once again answered, adding two runs of insurance in the eighth inning to take a 8-5 lead.
- In the bottom of the ninth, junior Matt Yip led off with a double and Lebrecht walked with one out to get the tying run to the plate, but the Knights would hold the Lions off the scoreboard and secure the victory, 8-5.
Top Performances
- Scavelli totaled two hits including his third home run of the season and drove in four RBIs for the third time this season.
- Yip collected two hits.
- Lebrecht tallied two walks, one hit, one RBI, and a run scored.
