Staten Island, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team completed its series with the College of Staten Island Monday afternoon defeating the Dolphins, 4-3, at Mitchel Field. Molloy improved to 19-10 overall and 7-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins moved to 8-15 overall and 2-6 in league play.
How it Happened
- CSI jumped in front, 1-0, following an RBI ground out in the top of the second inning.
- The Lions answered in the bottom of the frame when junior Matt Yip singled between short and third to knot the contest at one.
- The Dolphins recorded a run in the third and fourth off a pair of RBI doubles to regain the lead, 3-1, after four innings of baseball.
- After surrendering a leadoff triple, senior AJ Verga worked out of a first and third jam in the fifth to keep the score 3-1.
- Molloy cut the lead in half, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth when graduate student Jake McCarthy recorded a sacrifice fly.
- The cardinal and white rallied for two runs in the sixth, graduate student Robby Keane singled home a run and Yip scored following a wild pitch to put Molloy in front, 4-3.
- The 4-3 lead is all the Molloy bullpen would need as Verga and sophomore Jason Schwartz would shut out the Dolphins and solidify the victory, 4-3.
Top Performances
- Junior Gavin McAlonie paced the team with three hits.
- Yip, Keane, and McCarthy drove in a run each.
- Freshman Sean Welsh started the contest pitching 3.2 innings allowing six hits, three runs, two earned, and struck out two.
- Verga threw 2.1 innings allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts to improve to 1-1 on the season.
- Schwartz tossed the final three innings giving up one hit and striking out three to record his first save of his collegiate career.
