Softball Sweeps D'Youville to Earn Top Seed in ECC Tournament

Buffalo, N.Y. - Led by five strikeouts from junior Brianna Macias in the first game and three RBIs from graduate student Amanda King in the second game, the softball team swept the Saints of D'Youville University to earn the top seed and hosting rights in next week's East Coast Conference Tournament. The Lions end the regular season with a record of 29-19 overall and 15- in ECC play while D'Youville ends at 16-26.

Game One: Molloy 4, D'Youville 3
  • King led off the second inning with a triple before scoring on a double to left center field from senior Karsyn Eaton to put Molloy on the board.
  • The score would hold through the next three innings with both teams combining for just one hit.
  • In the fifth inning, four-straight singles from junior Chrissie Huhn, junior Katie Hand, freshman Emily McGurk, and King doubled the Lions' lead. A single from senior Akemi Poyer set the score at 3-0.
  • A single, walk, and error allowed the Saints to tie the contest in the home half of the inning with a bases-clearing double from Jamie Bower.
  • Molloy responded in the sixth inning with freshman Mae Savage and senior Steph Conrade both singling before Savage scored on an infield error by the Saints.
  • D'Youville had one base runner in the final two innings, but Macias was able to keep them off the board. The junior fanned five in a complete game effort, improving to 12-5 on the season.
  • Huhn and King led with two hits with Huhn going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and King going 2-for-4 with the triple.
  • King, Eaton, and Poyer recorded RBIs for the Lions.
Game Two: Molloy 10, D'Youville 5
  • The Lions' bats went right to work to start the second half of the double header, loading the bases with the first three batters.
  • Hand's single up the middle scored Conrade before McGurk's RBI ground out plated Huhn to put Molloy ahead 2-0.
  • D'Youville took its first lead of the afternoon in the home half of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits.
  •  Conrade singled and stole second before advancing to third on Huhn's at bat. The junior reached on an error and stole second before a walk to Hand once again loaded the bases for Molloy. A wild pitch allowed Molloy to tie the contest before regaining the lead on another RBI ground out from McGurk, 4-3.
  • A sacrifice fly from Lauren Booth tied the contest once again in the home half of the second inning.
  • After a scoreless third inning, a defensive miscue from the Saints allowed Huhn to score on an error to put the Lions in front, 5-4.
  • The home team tied the contest in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from Mikayla Bush.
  • Molloy regained the lead in the sixth with an RBI double from King before exploding for four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh with RBIs from Hand and King to set the score at 10-5.
  • King retired three of the final four Saints to clinch the crucial win for Molloy. The graduate student tossed 6.1 innings in relief, striking ou three batters while going 3-for-5 with three RBI at the plate.
  • Conrade, Huhn, and senior Emma Bachman each tallied two hits and stole a base.
  • Hand and McGurk each drove in two runs.

Top-seeded Molloy will host fourth-seeded Queens in the first day of the conference tournament on Wednesday (May 3) at 3:00 p.m. from Rockville Centre.
