Softball Takes Two Against Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team swept the Mavericks of Mercy College in a doubleheader this afternoon from the Rockville Centre Sports Complex, improving to 16-10 on the season and 4-0 in East Coast Conference play.

Game One: Molloy 5, Mercy 4
  • Senior Steph Conrade and graduate student Alex Burns both singled to left field and stole a base, setting up senior Karsyn Eaton for an RBI single to put Molloy on the board in the bottom half of the first inning.
  • Eaton and Burns scored on a single from graduate student Amanda King to increase the lead to 3-1.
  • The Mavericks tied the contest in the third inning with two singles and a triple setting the table for a bases-clearing triple from Victoria Seppala and an RBI ground out from Samantha Franck.
  • In the fifth inning, a lead off double from senior Emma Bachman and bunt single to Conrade put up Burns, who plated Bachman with a sacrifice fly to put Molloy back in front.
  • Eaton followed suit in the next at bat, scoring Conrade on a sacrifice fly.
  • Mercy would come within one with a solo home run in the sixth and had a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but King recorded the final three outs for her sixth win and eighth complete game of the season.
  • The pitcher struck out three in the effort and drove in two runs in a 2-for-3 performance with a double at the plate.
  • Eaton went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs while sophomore Cheralyn Dusharme also recorded two hits.
Game Two: Molloy 7, Mercy 4
  • Mercy was first on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on four hits, including an RBI single from Sydney Johnston.
  • Dusharme tied the game in the second inning with an RBI double before senior Akemi Poyer hit her second home run of the season to put the Lions in front, 3-1.
  • With runners on second and third, Burns had a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 4-1.
  • Shannon Sisco halved the lead in the fourth with a double.
  • Eaton and King combined for back-to-back sacrifice flies in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead.
  • Freshman Emily McGurk plated Poyer in the sixth inning to round out Molloy's runs.
  • The Mavericks threatened in the seventh, scoring two runs on a double and sacrifice fly, but junior Brianna Macias forced a line out to end the contest.
  • Macias improved to 8-2 on the season with eight complete games, striking out four.
  • Poyer went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored at the plate.
  • Conrade added two more stolen bases to bring her season total to 17.
