Uniondale, N.Y. – Propelled by 14 hits and 10 walks, the Molloy baseball team defeated the Mavericks of Mercy College, 17-4, Wednesday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improved to 16-8 overall and 4-0 in ECC play, while the Mavericks moved to 4-19 overall and 0-4 in league play.
How it Happened
- An RBI groundout put Molloy ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first.
- Mercy knotted the contest at one in the second following a run scoring fielder's choice.
- Molloy reclaimed the lead, 2-1, following a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.
- The game was broken open in the fourth as the Lions rallied to seven runs on seven hits to take a 9-1 lead. Junior Aidan Larkin singled home a run and scored on a wild pitch, Yip, sophomore Tom Lebrecht, and junior Anthony Manisero drove in run scoring singles, graduate Jake McCarthy brought a run across with a ground out, and junior Gavin McAlonie walked with the bases loaded to cap the seven-run frame.
- Mercy totaled one run in the fifth and the Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to keep the lead at eight, 10-2.
- The road team crossed the plate twice in the sixth to come within six, 10-4.
- The cardinal and white responded with two runs of its own in the sixth. Junior Chris Einemann singled and Yip doubled to reestablish the eight-run lead, 12-4.
- The home team added three runs in the seventh inning to increase its advantage, 15-4.
- Two more runs crossed the plate in the eighth when freshman Jack Coogan doubled down the right field line as Molloy would close out the victory, 17-4.
Top Performances
- Yip paced the team with three runs and three RBIs.
- Lebrecht, Manisero, Coogan, McCarthy, Larkin, and McAlonie drove in two runs each.
- Graduate student Robert Lucano tossed six innings allowing eight hits, four runs, three earned, and struck out three to improve to 4-0 on the campaign.
- Freshman Sean Welsh pitched two scoreless innings and graduate student Christopher Wiercinski pitched a scoreless ninth.
