Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Mercy College Mavericks (20-7 and 9-6) Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions improved to 15-8 overall and 3-0 in ECC play, while the Mavericks moved to 4-18 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 20, Mercy 7
- Sophomore JJ DeVito led off the contest with a solo home run to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
- Mercy responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs to take a 3-1 lead after the first inning of play.
- The offense continued to thrive in the second inning. Junior Chris Einemann doubled to score two runs, junior Matt Yip drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, graduate student Robby Keane doubled to left center, and DeVito capped the five-run inning with a two-run homer to push Molloy ahead, 6-3.
- The bats stayed hot in the fourth, as the cardinal white rallied to a seven-run inning. Keane scored a run with a single, junior Garrett Scavelli tripled to score junior Aidan Larkin, junior Anthony Manisero scored Scavelli with a double, Larkin found the left center field gap with a two-RBI double, and Einemann finished off the inning with a two-run homer to extend the Molloy lead, 13-3.
- After tacking on a run in the fifth, the Lions added five more in the eighth inning. Run-scoring doubles from junior Gavin McAlonie, freshman Jack Coogan, and sophomore Tom Lebrecht kept Molloy in front, 19-3.
- The Mavericks tacked on three runs in the bottom of the eighth to come within 13, 19-6.
- Both teams would add runs in the ninth as Molloy would go on to win game one, 20-7.
- Einemann totaled three hits including his first home run of the season, three runs scored, and three RBI.
- Yip, Keane, and Larkin tallied two hits, two runs, and two RBI.
- DeVito blasted two home runs.
- Graduate student Brian Morrisey pitched seven innings allowing seven hits, three runs, and struck out three to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 9, Mercy 6
- Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead following a pair of singles in the first inning.
- The Lions responded in the bottom of the frame, RBI singles from graduate student Jake McCarthy and Larkin brought Molloy within one, 3-2.
- The Mavericks regained its three-run lead in the top of the second, 5-2.
- The cardinal and white got one back in the bottom of the frame following a solo home run from junior Stephen Collica. Molloy trailed, 5-3, after two innings of action.
- In the fourth, Lebrecht singled to score a run to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.
- The bottom of the fifth saw McAlonie connect for a two-run home run to push Molloy in front, 6-5.
- Mercy responded in the top of the sixth knotting the contest at six.
- The Lions totaled three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Scavelli singled to score freshman Sean Serrano, Manisero drove in a run with a ground out, and McCarthy scored Scavelli with a single to solidify the 9-6 victory.
- McCarthy paced the team with three hits and two RBI.
- McAlonie belted his first career home run and drove in two runs.
- Collica blasted his second home run of the season.
- Scavelli totaled two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI.
- Graduate student tossed a complete game allowing 10 hits, six runs, and struck out four to move to 4-0 on the campaign.
