Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team swept the Chargers of Dominican University (12-4 and 8-3) Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improved to 11-7, while the Chargers move 1-15.
Game One: Molloy 12, Dominican 4
- Molloy struck in the bottom of the first, graduate student Chris Peralta singled home sophomore JJ DeVito to put the Lions in front, 1-0.
- The home team tallied two runs in the following inning. Junior Stephen Collica singled to score junior Chris Einemann and junior Garrett Scavelli brought Collica home with a sacrifice fly to put Molloy ahead, 3-0.
- Dominican got a run back in the top of the third with an RBI single to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.
- The cardinal and white answered in the bottom of the inning, Einemann singled to left field to score junior Aidan Larkin to regain the three-run lead, 4-1.
- In the fifth, Peralta belted a solo home run over the left field fence and Larkin scored off a throwing error to extend the Lions lead to 6-1.
- Molloy put together a six-run seventh inning to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Larkin drilled and RBI triple, sophomore Tom Lebrecht scored Larkin with a double, Collica collect a sacrifice fly, and Scavelli capped the inning with a three-run home run.
- Dominican tallied three runs in the top of the ninth, as Molloy would go on to take game one, 12-4.
- Senior Charlie Cucchiara pitched seven innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out nine to move to 3-1 on the season.
- Sophomore Jason Schwartz threw the final two frames.
- Scavelli totaled four RBIs.
- Peralta tallied three hits and two RBIs.
- Lebrecht slashed three hits.
Game Two: Molloy 8, Dominican 3
- After two innings of scoreless baseball, Larkin connected with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to give the Lions a 3-0 advantage.
- Dominican got a run back in the fifth following a sacrifice fly to shorten the lead, 3-1.
- Later in the inning with a man on second and the tying run at the plate, Scavelli made an inning ending diving catch to limit the damage.
- The Lions put together a five-run sixth inning. Junior Anthony Manisero came into pinch hit and drilled a two-rbi single with the bases loaded, graduate student Robby Keane collected an infield single, and sophomore JJ DeVito doubled to bring home Keane to extend the led to 8-1.
- Dominican tacked on two runs in the final frame, but the Lions would take game two, 8-3.
- Graduate student Brian Morrisey tossed six innings allowing one run on six hits to improve to 2-2 on the campaign.
- Sophomore Sean Mileti pitched the final inning.
- Larkin hit his first home run of the season and drove in three runs.
- Keane and DeVito totaled two runs and one RBI each.
