Clermont, Fla. – The Molloy softball team began its Florida trip with a doubleheader sweep of No. 8 University of Indianapolis, 2-1, and Le Moyne, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Legends Way Field. Molloy improved to 6-2 and has won five straight contests.
Game One: Molloy 2, U-Indy 1
- The Lions struck first when graduate student Alex Burns scored senior Karysn Eaton and junior Chrissie Huhn to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Greyhounds looked to tie it in the third inning, but junior Brianna Macias kept them off the scoreboard by inducing a groundout with the bases loaded to end the inning.
- U Indy looked to crack the scoreboard again in the fifth with a runner in scoring position, but Macias once again worked out of the inning to keep Molloy ahead, 2-0.
- In the seventh, the Greyhounds scored following an RBI single to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
- The road team had the tying and go-ahead runners on second and third with one out looking to take the lead. For the third time, Macias buckled down to strikeout and force a fly out to the final two batters of the game to clinch the upset, 2-1.
- Macias pitched a complete game allowing one run on seven hits to move to 3-0 on the season.
- Burns totaled two RBIs.
- This is the first time in program history that the Lions defeated a team ranked in the top-10.
Game Two: Molloy 3, Le Moyne 1
- The Lions began the second game with three runs in the second inning. Senior Steph Conrade scored a run with a ground out, Huhn singled to score freshman Emily McGurk, and senior Emma Bachman stole home off a double steal to put Molloy in front, 3-0.
- The Dolphins bats were held in check by graduate student Amanda King, who did not allow a runner to go past first base through six innings.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Le Moyne scored a run following an RBI double to cut the lead down to two, 3-1.
- With a runner on third with one out in the seventh, the Lions defense threw out a Dolphin at the plate to halt the rally.
- King forced a pop out for the final out of the afternoon as Molloy would go on to win, 3-1.
- King tossed a complete game allowing one run on four hits to move to 2-2 on the campaign.
- Huhn, Eaton, and McGurk led the team with two hits each.
