Women’s Basketball Slips at UDC

Washington, D.C. – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia, 74-68, Wednesday evening inside Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson Sports Complex. The Lions move to 4-18 overall and 4-10 in East Coast Conference play, while the Firebirds improve to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The Firebirds opened the contest on a 16-0 run, shooting 78 percent from the floor.
  • Molloy responded with a run of its own, clinging to a 17-4 rally with a hot hand from three-point range. The Lions shot three-of-five from downtown paced by freshman Sophia Yearwood who went two-of-two. Molloy trailed, 20-17, after the opening stanza.
  • The hot shooting continued into the second quarter; sophomore Janel Moore nailed a three in the opening 20 seconds to knot the game at 20.
  • The home team regained momentum, rallying to a 11-2 run to reclaim the lead, 31-22, with under six minutes to play in the first half.
  • A pair of baskets from freshman Casey Campo and a jumper from graduate student Gianni Domond cut the deficit to five, 33-28, with three minutes to go in the second quarter.
  • Molloy went into halftime behind, 42-32.
  • A three from sophomore Samantha Muller and a layup from junior Trinity Hudson brought the Lions within nine, 46-37, 2:48 into the second half.
  • Back-to-back three-point field goals from freshman Brianna James closed the deficit to two, 46-44, midway through the third quarter.
  • A jumper from Muller and consecutive layups from freshman Rosa Rizzitelli brought the contest all square, 50-50, with 2:37 to go in the third stanza.
  • Graduate student Gianni Domond netted the final three points for the Lions, including a layup with no time remaining to give Molloy a 55-52 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The cardinal and white began the stanza with threes from Domond and Hudson to pull ahead, 61-55.
  • UDC took control of the contest, going on a furious 15-0 run to retake the lead, 70-61, with 2:32 to play.
  • A layup from Campo with 59 seconds to play cut the deficit to five, 71-66, but that is as close as the Lions would come as UDC would hold on to win, 74-68. 
Top Performances
  • Hudson paced the squad with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
  • Domond totaled 12 points and pulled down six rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.
  • Campo and Moore tallied eight points apiece.
  • Molloy shot a season-high 53 percent from three-point range and 47 percent from the floor.

The Lions return home Saturday, February 11 to host Staten Island. Tip-off against the Dolphins is slated for 12:00 p.m.
