Box Score Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team defeated the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, 44-39, Saturday afternoon inside Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy improves to 5-18 overall and 4-10 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins move to 9-15 overall and 5-9 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Lions came out of the gates scorching hot, clinging to a 15-2 run shooting 75 percent from the floor and 75 percent from three-point range. Sophomore Samantha Muller led the charge, scoring six points in during the run. Molloy led 15-6 after the first quarter of action.
- Graduate student Nora Gabel began the second stanza with a three to increase the Lions lead to 18-6.
- Defense paced the remaining of the first half, as both teams combined to make three field goals. But the Lions converted five-of-six from the foul line to take a 25-10 lead into halftime.
- Coming out of the locker room, a layup from freshman Casey Campo and a pair of three throws from freshman Rosa Rizzitelli increased the Lions lead to 16, 29-13, with under eight minutes to play in the third stanza.
- Two foul shots from junior Trinity Hudson gave the Lions its largest lead of the contest, 31-14, midway through the quarter.
- Staten Island closed the third on a 10-1 rally to shorten the deficit to eight, 32-24, heading into the fourth quarter.
- The road team continued to cut into the lead in the fourth, cutting the lead down to four, 34-30, with 7:16 to play.
- Following two free throws from Muller, CSI put together a mini 5-0 rally to bring the contest within one, 36-35, with 4:38 remaining.
- 23 seconds later, Hudson put an end to the run with a three-point shot from the right wing to push Molloy ahead, 39-35.
- With 19 seconds to play, Ashley Lambert drained a three to bring the road team back within one, 40-39.
- Sophomore Janel Moore and Hudson made two free throw a piece in the final 15 seconds to solidify the victory, 44-39.
Top Performances
- Muller paced the squad tying a game-high 15 points while bringing down seven rebounds.
- Hudson finished the game with nine points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks.
- Rizzitelli totaled seven points and nine rebounds.
