Men's Basketball Takes Third Straight in Double Overtime Thriller Over Queens

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The men's basketball team won its third-straight contest this afternoon, earning a hard-fought win in double overtime over Queens College, 87-80. The victory sets Molloy at 10-14 on the season and 9-3 in East Coast Conference play while the Knights fell to 7-15 (4-7 ECC) in the loss.

How it Happened
  • With the score tied, 4-4, the Lions went on a 11-3 run to go in front, 15-7. 
  • Molloy would maintain its advantage through the remainder of the first half, only letting Queens come within one possession, trailing by two at the half, 35-33.
  • The visitors would score the first seven points of the second half to go in front, 40-35. 
  • Trailing by six, a three-pointer from redshirt junior Kendell Ogilvie and jumper from sophomore Kenny Lazo brought the home team within one, 43-42. 
  • An 8-2 run from the Knights put the visitors back ahead by seven, 51-44, with 8:26 to play.
  • Headed into the final five minutes, Queens would lead by as many as nine points. 
  • Five points from sophomore Darren Fergus helped Molloy to come within three ,63-60, with under 90 seconds left in regulation.
  • Trailing by three with eight seconds on the clock, Fergus capitalized on a missed free throw from Queens, grabbing the rebound and dishing the ball to Lazo, who sent the ball through the net as time expired to knot the score and force overtime, 67-67.
  • Molloy would go up by three in the first overtime period, but a three-pointer by Queens knotted the score at 72. Neither team was able to sink a basket in the final two minutes, forcing a second overtime.
  • Lazo drained another triple to open the second overtime, followed by a layup from Fergus to give the Lions a five-point lead, 77-72.
  • The visitors would come within three in the final minute, 83-80, but the final four points of the contest were sunk by the cardinal and white to earn the victory.
Top Performances
  • Fergus narrowly missed a triple-double with 30 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists while adding two steals and one block.
  • Lazo netted 18 points, including three three-pointers, to go with four rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal.
  • Ogilvie had a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds while leading with four steals.
  • Senior William Muller had two blocks to go with seven points and three assists.
