Women’s Basketball Topped by Mercy, 59-48

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the Mavericks of Mercy College, 59-48, Wednesday evening inside the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center. The Lions move to 5-19 overall and 4-11 in ECC play, while the Mavericks improve to 16-9 overall and 10-5 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions opened the contest on a 7-0 scoring run with baskets from sophomore Samantha Muller, freshman Casey Campo, and Trinity Hudson.
  • The home team responded with a 9-0 rally to push in front, 9-7, with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter.
  • A pair of layups from Campo and Muller gave Molloy a 11-9 advantage with over two minutes to play in the opening stanza. Molloy led, 13-12, heading into the second quarter.
  • Layups from sophomore Janel Moore and graduate student Gianni Domond kept Molloy in front, 17-14, with 6:26 remaining in the first half.
  • The Mavericks closed the second quarter on a 13-0 run holding the Lions to two field goals.
  • Molloy trailed, 27-17, at the break.
  • The Mavericks run continued into the third stanza, scoring the first four points to take a 15-point lead, 32-17.
  • Hudson ended the run with a layup to bring the deficit to 13, 32-19, with over eight minutes to play in the third quarter.
  • The teams traded baskets over the next seven minutes of action, but four consecutive free throws from freshman Rosa Rizzitelli brought the Lions within 10, 39-29, with 1:07 to go in the third stanza.
  • Four points in the last 20 seconds of the quarter cut the Lions deficit down to seven, 40-33, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Mercy opened the final stanza on a 11-4 run to retake its double-digit advantage, 51-37, with over six minutes to play.
  • The cardinal and white began its comeback answering with an 11-2 run highlighted by Moore who netted five points, to bring the game within five, 53-48, with 2:13 remaining.
  • The home team would close the game on a 6-0 rally to seal the victory, 59-48.
Top Performances
  • Rizzitelli netted 10 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to collect her third double-double of the season.
  • Muller totaled 10 points while playing a team-high 35 minutes.
  • Moore finished the contest with nine points, four steals, and four rebounds.
