Softball Holds Off Saint Anselm in Day Two Split

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The softball team rallied for a game two win over Saint Anselm College this afternoon on the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. Molloy ended the day with a 2-2 record while the Hawks were 3-1. 

Game One: St. Anselm 5, Molloy 2
  • After leaving two runners stranded in the first inning, the Hawks plated two runs on two hits and a fielding error in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • A single and back-to-back doubles in the third inning increased the lead to four in the third.
  • Walks to graduate students Alex Burns and Amanda King as well as sophomore Natalie Moussa loaded the bases for the Lions in the fifth inning, but the Hawks' defense kept them off the scoreboard.
  • St. A's scoring was rounded out in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off home run.
  • After reaching on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth, senior Karsyn Eaton was driven in by Burns who sent the ball deep into left field to put Molloy on the board.
  • A double from senior Akemi Poyer and single from junior Brianna Macias set the table for an RBI infield single for senior Steph Conrade in the top of the seventh before b-to-back ground outs halted Molloy's hope of knotting the score.
  • Burns led the Lions at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
  • Macias recorded her first collegiate hit at the plate and tossed two innings of relief. 
  • King went four innings, striking out two batters.
Game Two: Molloy 9, St. Anselm 6
  • The Lions struck first in the second contest with Moussa doubling to left center field to plate both Eaton and Hand.
  • Saint Anselm took a one-run lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly, an RBI ground out and a double.
  • Molloy threatened in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases, but we unable to plate a run.
  • Smart base running opened up the contest the following inning, scoring five runs. With runners on second and third, an error allowed junior Chrissie Huhn to score to knot the contest. 
  • Junior Emma Bachman took advantage of a throwing error attempting to pick off Burns and added a fourth run for Molloy.
  • A single from Hand plated Burns from second before Eaton hit a double that got past the center fielder and allowed her to advance all the way to home and gave the Lions a 7-3 advantage.
  • After Moussa sat down three of the four batters in the fifth inning, the cardinal and white added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a wild pitch and pinch hit RBI ground out from sophomore Cheralyn Dusharme
  • The Hawks threatened in the sixth inning, scoring on an RBI double and capitalizing on a throwing error on an attempted pick off. 
  • Macias worked out of a jam in relief with a strikeout and fly out  to end the inning.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Molloy defense successfully executed a rundown to prevent any runners from reaching base and earning the 9-6 victory.
  • Moussa led the Lions with two RBI while going 2-for-3. The sophomore added three strikeouts from the circle and allowed just two earned runs.
  • Hand, Eaton, and Huhn also tallied two hits with Burns swiping another two bags in the effort.

Molloy will wrap up its opening weekend with a doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus University beginning at 9:30 a.m.
