Morehead City, N.C. – The Molloy baseball team opened the 2023 campaign sweeping the Marauders of Millersville University (5-0 and 2-1) Saturday afternoon at Big Rock Stadium. The Lions improved to 2-0, while the Marauders fell to 7-3.

Game One: Molloy 5, Millersville 0
  • The two teams felt each other out in the first two innings as only one hit was collected by either side.
  • Molloy broke through in the top of the third, junior Aidan Larkin singled to bring home sophomore JJ DeVito to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • Millersville threatened in the bottom of the frame with two runners on, but junior Charlie Cucchiara induced a pair of fly outs to get out of the jam.
  • Molloy opened the game up in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs. DeVito knocked in sophomore Tom Lebrecht with an RBI single and graduate student Jake McCarthy blasted a three-run home run to push the Lions ahead, 5-0.
  • The Marauders threated one last time in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second, but Cucchiara went unscathed and kept them off the scoreboard. Molloy would go on to close out the contest victorious, 5-0.
  • Cucchiara threw six shutout innings while collecting three strikeouts to move to 1-0 on the season.
  • Senior Richard Gennaro pitched the final frame and struck out two batters.
Game Two: Molloy 2, Millersville 1
  • The Lions broke the scoreboard quickly in the bottom of the first, McCarthy singled to score DeVito to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
  • Pitching and defense was the name of the game through the fifth inning, as the game remained 1-0 in favor of the cardinal and white after five innings of play.
  • The Marauders knotted the contest at one in the top of the sixth following an RBI double.
  • In the bottom of the eight the Lions looked to take the lead, loading the bases. But Millersville kept Molloy off the scoreboard to keep the game tied at one.
  • The bottom of the ninth saw the cardinal and white put two runners on looking for the game winning run, but again, the Marauders bullpen would not allow the Lions to cross the plate. Sending the game into extra innings.
  • After holding Millersville scoreless in the top of the 10th, junior Garrett Scavelli lead off the bottom of the frame with a single, freshman Sean Serrano, and junior Chris Einemann walked to load the bases.
  • The first pitch to junior Chris Giardino got by the catcher to score Scavelli, the Lions would go on to win, 2-1.
