Women’s Basketball Falls to UDC

Washington, D.C. – The Molloy women's basketball fell to the Firebirds of the District of Columbia, 81-63, Saturday afternoon. The Lions move to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Firebirds improve to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • Senior Trinity Hudson began the contest with back-to-back layups in the paint to give the Lions an early lead.
  • After UDC tied the game at four, junior Samantha Muller netted a jumper to put Molloy back in front, 6-4.
  • The Firebirds finished the quarter on a 16-3 run to take a 20-9 lead into the second quarter.
  • Sophomore Casey Campo opened the second stanza with a fast break layup to cut the deficit to single-digits, 20-11.
  • Back-to-back three-point baskets from sophomores Sophia Yearwood and Brianna James kept the Lions within striking distance, 27-17, midway through the second quarter.
  • A three-point play from sophomore Colleen McCullagh brought the deficit down to seven, 27-20, with 4:07 left in the first half.
  • UDC was able to regain its double-digit lead, 33-22, with 2:18 remaining in the first half and took a nine-point lead, 35-26, into halftime.
  • 56 seconds into the second half, the home team opened a 14-point advantage, 40-26.
  • The cardinal and white responded with a 7-0 rally that was capped by a three-point field goal from graduate student Isabel Sanchez to cut the lead in half, 40-33, with eight minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • The Firebirds would control the contest from then on, not allowing Molloy to get any closer than seven and leading by as much as 20 en route to the victory.
Top Performances
  • McCullagh led the squad scoring 12 points and brought down nine rebounds.
  • Hudson collected her fourth straight double-double netting 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
  • Yearwood tallied 10 points hitting two three-point baskets.
  • Junior Janel Moore added six points and tied a game-high eight assists.

The Lions open a two-game home stand beginning Friday (Dec. 8) as they welcome the Wildcats of Daemen University to Quealy Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
