Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team was involved in another tight one possession contest Tuesday evening but could not come away with a victory as they would fall, 60-59, to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State inside Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy moves to 3-8 on the season, while Southern Connecticut improves to 5-5.
How it Happened
- The opening quarter went back and forth, as the lead changed hands seven times with the score knotted at 12 at the end of the stanza.
- Sophomore Sophia Yearwood netted the first five points of the second quarter, but Molloy trailed, 21-17, with 4:31 remaining in the first half.
- Four straight points from sophomore Colleen McCullagh over the next minute brought the contest all square at 21.
- Southern Connecticut concluded the second quarter on a 10-4 rally, to take a 31-25 advantage into halftime.
- The Lions began the third quarter on a 9-3 run, highlighted by junior Danielle Hippner who collected five points en route to tying the game at 34 with 5:23 left in the stanza.
- The two squads would go shot for shot over four minutes of action and remain tied at 43 with 70 seconds left in the third quarter.
- McCullagh and Yearwood netted a basket each in the final minute of the stanza, giving the Lions a four-point lead, 47-43, heading into the fourth.
- The road team started quickly in the fourth stanza, rallying to a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 50-47, with under eight minutes to play.
- Four straight foul shots from McCullagh regained Molloy's lead, 51-50, with 6:09 left on the scoreboard.
- The Owls regained its three-point lead, 58-55, with under four minutes to go.
- A basket from junior Janel Moore and one free throw each from McCullagh and senior Trinity Hudson gave Molloy a one-point advantage, 59-58, with 2:43 remaining.
- With under a minute to play, Southern Connecticut hit a jumper to seal the contest, held Molloy scoreless, and would seal the victory, 60-59.
