Volleyball Forces Five But Falls at Daemen

Amherst, N.Y. - After dropping the first two sets from Lumsden Gymnasium, the volleyball team rallied to force a deciding set against the Wildcats of Daemen University. Despite it taking extra points to determine the winner, the Wildcats remained undeafeated in East Coast Conference play (11-0) and improved to 21-5 on the season. Molloy enters the final week of the regular season at 12-13 (7-4 ECC).

How it Happened
  • The Lions started the contest out with two sizeable runs, jumping in front by a score of 9-4, with three kills, a block, and an ace from senior Kiarra Roth, a kill and block from junior Rebecca Meier, and a kill from senior Chye Davis
  • The Wildcats responded with a run of its own, taking a 14-12 lead. 
  • Kills from Meier and Roth paired with a number of attacking errors from Daemen helped Molloy to a 21-20 advantage late in the first set. The Wildcats responded with three-straight points before the visitors tied the contest, 23-23. An attack error and kill from Kate Ryan sealed the first set in favor of Daemen.
  • The Wildcats lead 8-3 to start the second set. 
  • Kills from Meier, Roth, and sophomore Sara Hiebert tied the score, 13-13. Daemen would retake the lead, 17-15, but the Lions would knot the score with the next two points. 
  • The home team would score eight of the final nine points to take a 2-0 advantage for the match.
  • Molloy scored the first two points of the third set and led from open to close. 
  • In the fourth set, the score would be tied 14 times, including as late as 16-16. The Lions closed the set by scoring 10 of the final 11 points with kills from Roth, Meier, Hiebert, and sophomore Roberta Monticelli.
  • Molloy fell behind 6-3 to start the deciding set, but took an 8-6 lead following a five-point run with kills from Meier, Monticelli, and Roth and a block from Hiebert.
  • The teams were tied, 15-15, when an ace and a kill went in favor of the Wildcats to clinch the game. 
Top Performances
  • Roth led with 18 kills and added 16 digs for a double-double. 
  • Graduate student Mariana Donado Yepes also had a double-double with 47 assists and 15 digs. 
  • Meier and Davis each put up 13 kills.
  • Hiebert led with five blocks and added five digs and four kills. 
  • Sophomore Aria Miller had 22 digs and four assists.
  • Monticelli reached double digit digs (13) and tallied nine kills, three aces, and two blocks.
