Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Wednesday evening marked the third straight overtime contest for the Molloy women's basketball team, but the Lions fell short, 73-71, against the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island inside Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy moves to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Dolphins began the contest on a 12-3 run, holding the Lions to three points without a made field goal in the opening 6:39.
- A small 5-0 rally by the Lions cut the deficit to four, 12-8, over the next 2:30 of action. Molloy trailed, 15-9, after the first stanza.
- A lay up from sophomore Casey Campo and a three-point basket from sophomore Sophia Yearwood kept the Lions within four, 18-14, 1:30 into the second quarter.
- The road team answered with an 8-0 run, forcing Molloy into five turnovers, and shooting four-of-six from the field to take a 12-point lead, 26-14, midway through the second.
- The squads would trade baskets until, junior Samantha Muller hit a three and junior Danielle Hippner hit a jumper to cut the deficit to single-digits, 30-21, with 3:20 remaining in the first half.
- The Lions would head into the locker room behind, 34-25.
- After trading baskets to begin the second half Molloy found its stride, rallying to a 14-1 run that was capped by a three-point shot from Yearwood to give the Lions its first lead of the game, 43-40, with 4:32 to go in the third quarter.
- Four points from Muller and senior Trinity Hudson kept Molloy in front by four, 51-47, with 1:11 left in the third stanza.
- Yearwood would convert a layup off a feed from Muller to close out a 28-point quarter, giving the Lions a 53-47 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
- Staten Island opened the fourth stanza with a 9-2 run to reclaim its lead, 56-55, with under six minutes to play.
- After tying the game following a free throw from sophomore Colleen McCullagh, Muller nailed a jump shot off an inbound lead to pull back in front, 58-56, with 5:26 left in the fourth.
- The contest would return to a shot-for-shot game as five ties would ensue over the next four minutes of game time.
- With 1:01 to play, McCullagh converted a layup giving Molloy a two-point advantage, 67-65.
- The road team would knot the contest at 67 with 11 seconds to go in regulation where the contest would stay to force overtime.
- In the extra period, the Dolphins opened with a layup, but McCullagh would tie the contest at 69 with 2:50 to play.
- Over two minutes would go by until Staten Island guard Ashley Lambert converted a three-point shot to push the Dolphins in front, 72-69, with 34 seconds remaining.
- McCullagh converted a layup with four seconds to play to bring Molloy within one, 72-71.
- After the road team hit a free throw, Molloy received the ball back in the front court with two seconds to play, but a shot with time expiring would not fall as the Dolphins hold on to secure the victory, 74-72.
Top Performances
- Muller netted a team-high 15 points while grabbing five rebounds.
- Hudson tallied 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to collect her fourth straight double-double and sixth straight game of 10 or more rebounds.
- Hippner and Yearwood totaled eight points each.
- Sanchez collected six points and junior Janel Moore had a game-high five steals.
