Sarah Tappeto in the sixth minute is all it would take, as the fourth-seeded Molloy women's soccer team defeated the fifth-seeded Knights of Queens College, 1-0, Thursday night at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 9-4-5 on the campaign, while the Knights conclude the season 6
-7-4.
How it Happened
- The Lions collected a pair of corners in the opening four minutes, a header from junior Natalia Piotrowski went wide of target following the second corner.
- The Knights generated a chance 3:58 into the contest, but a shot from Cassidy Pong went wide of target.
- In the sixth minute, graduate student Lauren Marinello played a through ball from midfield down the right flank and found a streaking Tappeto who carried the ball into the box and fired it into the left corner to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
- The cardinal and white looked to add to its lead three minutes later when freshman Isabella Muro created space, but her shot was saved by Queens goalkeeper Erin Kelly.
- The home team were able to generate another four chances over the course of the next 15 minutes of action, but two shots were blocked and the other two missed target.
- Piotrowski had a second chance in the 29th minute, but her shot went wide of the post.
- Molloy would not allow another shot for the remainder of the half and take its 1-0 lead into halftime.
- In the opening 2:15 of the second stanza, freshman Madison Keenan generated a chance that went wide of the near post.
- In the 58th minute following a deflected ball into the 18-yard box, graduate student Caitlin Kennedy saw her right-footed chance go wide of the far post.
- Looking for an insurance goal in the 69th minute, senior Erin Fogarty took a shot from 30 yards out, but her attempt was denied by Kelly.
- Queens was able to get a second shot off in the 82nd minute, but Julia Ragone had her shot blocked by the Lions backline.
- Sophomore Olivia Ingenito looked to score the elusive second goal, but her chance was saved in the 84th minute.
- Molloy would not allow Queens to generate another scoring chance for the remainder of the contest and go on and clinch the victory, 1-0.
Top Performances
- Tappeto netted her seventh goal of the season.
- Marinello handed out her fourth assist.
- In goal, Muñoz was not forced to make a save and picked up her third solo shut out of the season.
