Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Paced by 58 percent shooting from three-point range, the Molloy women's basketball team defeated the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 82-73, in the first game of the new campaign.
How it Happened
- The Griffins began the contest on a 6-0 run in the opening 3:08 of action.
- Molloy would respond with an 8-2 run, highlighted by junior Danielle Hippner and sophomore Casey Campo who scored four points apiece to bring the game tied at eight with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
- Three points from sophomore Colleen McCullagh and consecutive three-point baskets from sophomore Sophia Yearwood opened up a 17-12 lead with two minutes to go in the opening stanza.
- Junior Samantha Muller capped the first quarter with a layup, giving Molloy a 19-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
- The road team outscored the home team, 8-4, in the opening two minutes of the quarter to come within one, 23-22.
- The cardinal and white would put together a 10-0 run over the next 3:07 of action to take a 11-point lead, 33-22.
- Consecutive three-point shots from junior Janel Moore and Yearwood pushed Molloy in front, 41-28, with 1:34 to play in the first half.
- The Lions took a 43-34 advantage into halftime.
- Chestnut Hill opened the third stanza with a 9-0 run to come even with the Lions, 43-43, halfway through.
- A layup from McCullagh and a three-point play from Muller snapped the run, as the Lions would reclaim the lead, 48-43, with 4:06 remaining in the third.
- The Griffins would shoot 71 percent and the Lions shot 50 percent to conclude the third quarter with Molloy holding a narrow, 58-57, advantage heading into the final stanza.
- After a three-point play from Chestnut Hill guard Avery White, Yearwood would convert consecutive three's on back-to-back possessions to pull Molloy in front, 64-60, with over eight minutes to go.
- Four points over the next 1:15 from the Griffins brought them within one, 65-64, with 6:45 to go.
- Molloy rallied to a 6-0 run over the next 80 seconds of action, with baskets from Muller, Hippner, and sophomore Brianna James to take a 71-64 lead.
- The road team came within three, 71-68, with 3:31 remaining, but that is as close as the Lions would allow it, as Molloy would shoot 6-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch and close out the victory, 82-73.
Top Performances
- Yearwood scored a career-high 20 points shooting 70 percent from the floor and 66 percent from downtown.
- Muller tallied a career-high 20 points shooting eight of nine from the foul line.
- Hippner collected a double-double scoring 14 points and and 13 rebounds to go with three steals and two blocks.
- Senior Trinity Hudson added 13 rebounds and three assists.
