Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the 15th-ranked Rams of Jefferson, 81-59, Sunday afternoon inside Quealy Gymnasium. Molloy moved to 1-1 on the campaign, while the Rams improved to 2-0.
How it Happened
- Back and forth basketball between the two teams in the opening three minutes, but a layup from junior Danielle Hippner gave Molloy a three-point lead, 11-8, with 6:41 to play in the opening stanza.
- After trading baskets over the next three minutes of action, Jefferson took a three-point advantage, 18-15, following a layup from Hayley Meinel with under four minutes to play in the first quarter.
- A jumper from junior Samantha Muller closed the gap to one, 18-17, with 2:56 remaining on the clock.
- Jefferson closed the first quarter on an 11-3 run to take a 29-20 lead going into the second quarter.
- The road team opened the second stanza with a 7-0 run to extend its lead, 36-20, 2:37 into the quarter.
- A jumper from sophomore Colleen McCullagh snaped the Jefferson run, but the Rams responded with another mini 4-0 run to open an 18-point lead, 40-22.
- A three-point play from junior Janel Moore and a three-point basket from sophomore Rosa Rizzitelli closed the deficit to 12, 40-28, with four minutes to go in the first half.
- The Lions trailed, 50-34, going into halftime.
- Moore began the third quarter with a three-point shot to shrink the lead down to 15, 52-37, 2:36 into the second half.
- The cardinal and white would battle tooth and nail with the Rams, but would not come any closer than 15, as Jefferson would close out the victory, 81-59.
Top Performances
- Moore paced the squad with 16 points shooting 50 percent from three-point range.
- Hippner collected 11 points and a game-high five blocks.
- Senior Trinity Hudson netted nine points and collected 10 rebounds.
- Muller added nine points while shooting 66 percent from the floor.
