Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at Assumption

Worcester, Mass. – The Molloy men's soccer team drew 1-1 with the Greyhounds of Assumption University Wednesday evening at Normand Marois '57 Field. The Lions move to 1-7-3 on the season while the Greyhounds move to 2-5-2 on the campaign.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions drew a foul in the 18-yard box in the second minute, earning them a penalty kick.
  • Graduate student Nicolay Kutzop was tasked to be the shooter, stepped up and blasted it into the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the early goings.
  • The Greyhounds looked for the equalizer over the next 17 minutes of play, totaling six shots with four coming on goal. Graduate student Dennis Mejia converted four saves to keep Molloy in front.
  • The cardinal and white were able to generate a scoring chance in the 42nd minute, but sophomore Sebastian Koch sent his shot wide of target.
  • Assumption looked to knot the contest with under a minute to play in the opening stanza, but Axel Gerremo put his high keeping Molloy in front, 1-0, going into halftime.
  • The opening 20 minutes of the second half saw both teams generate two shots apiece, but none of the opportunities landed on target, keeping the Lions in front.
  • In the 69th minute, the home team challenged Mejia once again, but the goalkeeper made another key save to preserve the 1-0 lead.
  • Senior Ryan Dobson found space for a scoring chance in the 73rd minute, but the forward sent his shot high of target.
  • The Greyhounds threatened 11 minutes later, with a shot off the boot of Joey Bianco, but Mejia stood strong in goal and made the save.
  • In the 87th minute, the home team looked for the game-tying goal, but Mejia once again stonewalled the offensive attack.
  • With 40 seconds to go in the contest, Assumption was able to find the equalizer from Vegard Pernes to end the match in a 1-1 draw.
Top Performances
  • Kutzop scored his first goal of the season.
  • Freshman Harvey Chahal and Dobson totaled two shots each.
  • In goal, Mejia made seven saves.

The Lions conclude its road trip Saturday (Oct. 7) with a conference matchup at Daemen. The contest is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
