Men’s Soccer Falls to Staten Island

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Dolphins Soccer Park. The Lions conclude the season 3-11-3 overall and 2-5-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins end the regular season 4-6-4 overall and 2-3-3 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The first shot of the contest came from the home team and ended up in the back of the net, as Miguel Espinosa put Staten Island in front, 1-0, 3:33 into the game.
  • Neither team would allow another opportunity over the next 12 minutes.
  • In the 16th minute, freshman Wilmer Flores had his shot blocked, and the follow up by freshman Steph Maurice was saved by Dolphins goalkeeper Amari Thompson to keep Molloy off the scoreboard.
  • The next 18 minutes was dominated by defense, until Staten Island created a chance in the 35th minute that went left of target.
  • The home team looked to extend its lead in the 42nd minute with two shots in a 14 second span, but graduate student Dennis Mejia made two saves sending the contest into halftime with Molloy trailing, 1-0.
  • Staten Island generated the first shot of the second half, but the attempt was saved by Mejia in the 51st minute.
  • The 65th minute saw the Dolphins try and increase its lead, but Mejia made another save to keep the contest at 1-0.
  • Two minutes later, freshman Matthew Broadhead created a chance, but his shot went high.
  • Staten Island would hold the Lions without a shot for the remainder of the half and go on to secure the win, 1-0.
Top Performances
  • Maurice paced the team with two shots and one shot on goal.
  • Broadhead, Flores, and junior Diogo Ferreira totaled one shot each.
  • In goal, Mejia made five saves.
