Women’s Soccer Slips at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team fell to the Mavericks of Mercy University, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions move to 5-4-4 overall and 2-2-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks improve to 5-3-3 overall and 3-1-2 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The opening 22 minutes saw three total shots, two coming from Mercy and one coming from Molloy, but neither team was able to put a shot on target.
  • The first shot on goal came from the Mavericks in the 25th minute, as Kayla Camacho looked to score, but her attempt was saved by senior Shannon Kilian.
  • The first half continued to be a defensive battle with both teams not allowing a scoring chance over the next 15 minutes of play.
  • The home team broke through in the 40th minute, with a goal coming from Marlene Avalos to pull ahead, 1-0.
  • A minute later, graduate student Caitlin Kennedy generated a scoring chance that she rang off the post and was followed up by sophomore Olivia Ingenito, who had her shot saved by Mercy goalkeeper Kamy Anaya to keep Molloy off the scoreboard.
  • Mercy threated with 2:09 to play in the first half, but Kilian denied the chance, sending the game into halftime with the Lions behind, 1-0.
  • 1:36 into the second stanza, junior Alessandra Borsellino created scoring chance with a shot to the bottom right corner, but her shot was saved to keep the Lions scoreless.
  • In the 53rd minute, the home team looked to build its lead, but a shot from Madison Rosa was saved by Kilian.
  • 21 minutes would go by without a shot on target as both squads' backline would be the focal point.
  • Kennedy found space in the 77th minute, but her game-tying attempt was denied in goal.
  • The final chance of the afternoon came in the 88th minute, when junior Natalia Piotrowski was able to get her shot on target, but it was saved by the defense of the Mavericks as they would go on to secure the victory, 1-0.
Top Performances
  • Kennedy led the team with four shots.
  • Ingenito, Piotrowski, and Borsellino totaled one shot on goal apiece.
  • In goal, Kilian made three saves.

The Lions continue conference play Wednesday (Oct. 18) as they play host to D'Youville. The contest is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
