West Haven, Conn. – Propelled by three goals from sophomore
Olivia Ingenito the Molloy women's soccer team defeated the Chargers of New Haven, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium. The Lions improve to 5-3-4 on the season, while the Chargers move to 3-7 on the campaign.
How it Happened
- The first chance of the afternoon went to the Lions as junior Alessandra Borsellino fired a shot that missed right of target.
- The home team threated in the 10th minute, but senior Shannon Kilian denied the chance to keep the game scoreless.
- Borsellino generated chances in the 16th and 27th minute and freshman Victoria Bustamante followed in the 26th minute, but all three chances were saved by New Haven goalkeeper Caitlyn Daley.
- The Lions continued its pressure in the 30th minute. Senior Sarah Tappeto fired a shot, but her chance was denied keeping the contest without a score.
- Five minutes later after entering the game, Ingenito found the back of the net off a feed from freshman Isabella Muro to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
- Eight seconds after the goal, the Chargers looked for the equalizer, but Kilian made a save to her right to keep the Lions ahead.
- New Haven continued to look for chances to tie the game before the half with a pair of shots in the 39th and 45th minutes. Kilian made two saves to close out the opening stanza keeping Molloy in front, 1-0, at halftime.
- 2:09 into the second half, graduate student Lauren Marinello found Ingenito who netted her second goal of the contest to extend the lead to 2-0.
- Entering the game at halftime, freshman Elyse Muñoz was tested in the 50th minute, but made a save to keep New Haven scoreless.
- Molloy won a penalty kick 27 seconds later. Graduate student Caitlin Kennedy stepped to the penalty dot and converted to extend the Lions lead, 3-0.
- The Chargers were able to come within two, 3-1, following a goal from Macy Litalien in the 52nd minute.
- Searching for her third goal of the contest, Ingenito had two chances in a 31 second span, but both were denied in the 60th and 61st minute.
- The Sound Beach native would not be denied as Ingenito would complete the hat trick in the 62nd minute to make the score, 4-1.
- The home team would total five shots in the final 28 minutes with three coming on goal, but Muñoz would make three saves to secure the win for the Lions, 4-1.
