Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The 15
th-ranked Molloy women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season as it fell to the Wilmington Wildcats, 2-1, Wednesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions moved to 4-1, while the Wildcats improved to 1-3-1.
How it Happened
- The opening 15 minutes proved to be a defensive battle as neither team allowed a shot.
- In the 20th minute, Wilmington earned its first shot of the contest and made the most of it, netting a goal from 35 yards out to pull ahead, 1-0.
- Following the goal, Molloy created a pair of opportunities. Senior Lexi Verni had a shot blocked, and senior Sienna Nicolich put a shot wide in the 24th minute.
- In the 34th minute, Verni had another chance at the net, but a shot was saved by Wilmington goalkeeper Mio Nakajima.
- Nicolich made a run down the left side with under two minutes remaining but put her shot wide. Molloy went into halftime down, 1-0.
- In the second stanza, Verni generated the first scoring opportunity with a shot that was saved.
- Molloy broke through in the 55th minute, off a corner kick from Nicolich, sophomore Natalia Piotrowski buried a shot standing by the back post to bring the contest all square, 1-1.
- Junior Sarah Tappeto put a shot on goal but was denied with 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
- 2:30 later, junior Erin Fogarty saw her chance hit the post. The match remained even, 1-1, in the 73rd minute.
- With under 10 minutes to play, Wilmington forward Jhanae Colston found space behind the defense and scored to put the Wildcats ahead and solidified the victory, 2-1.
