th minute lifted Molloy men's soccer past 23
rd-ranked Mercy College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 4-2-4 overall and 3-0-1 in East Coast Conference play, while Mercy fell to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
How it Happened
- The first 14 minutes of action saw both teams battle for momentum, as neither team generated a shot.
- In the 15th minute, Mercy forward David Breitenbach had his shot saved by graduate student Nick Conklu.
- 10 minutes later, sophomore Matt Laya-Vetell had his first chance but shot it over the crossbar.
- The Mavericks threatened at the end of the first half, but Conklu made two saves to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
- Four minutes into the second stanza, Dobson had an opportunity to put Molloy on the scoreboard, but his shot went just wide of the net.
- The road team made the most of its first chance in the 56th minute, a ball played into the box was headed in by Breitenbach giving Mercy a 1-0 lead.
- The Lions looked to tie the game two minutes later, junior Danny Muir fired a shot on net, but was denied by Mercy goalkeeper Eirik Elvestad.
- In the 72nd minute Molloy would find the equalizer. Dobson found space along the end line at the far post and found sophomore Gio Fabiano in the box, who buried it into the back of the net to knot the contest at one.
- With the intensity of the match increasing, Mercy defender Martin Penafiel threw a shot on net that was denied by Conklu in the 76th minute.
- Over the next 12 minutes of play, neither team allowed a shot and the contest looked as if it would end in a draw.
- In the 89th minute of action, Molloy earned a throw in at the far side of the field. Muir launched it into the box, found the head of freshman Adam Lesniewski, and was tipped in by Dobson to send Rockville Centre into a frenzy.
- Molloy would finish the upset, 2-1.
