West Haven, Conn. - Junior
Hannah Niggemeier picked up the women's tennis team's first points of the season, winning both her singles and doubles matches in this afternoon's 5-2 loss at the University of New Haven. Molloy fell to 0-3 on the season while the Chargers improved to 3-1.
The afternoon began with a close doubles bout. The third tandem of sophomores
Brooke Williams and
Amanda Oppedisano fell, 6-3, before Niggemeier and freshman
Jill Cafaro won their second-pairing doubles match, 6-2. It would come down to the top pairing of junior
Noor Goyvaerts and sophomore
Camilla Caballero Abreu to secure the crucial doubles point. The duo fell in a close 6-4 match, putting New Haven up 1-0 on the afternoon.
Both Caballero Abreu and Niggemeier fell in their opening singles sets, 6-4 and 7-5, respectively. In the second set, they each topped their opponent 6-3 to force deciding sets, which each would win by a score of 10-7.
Goyvaerts (6-2, 6-1), Cafaro (6-1, 6-2), and Oppedisano (6-0, 6-2) each won games in their efforts.
The Lions head to Waterbury, Conn. on Tuesday (Sept. 20) to battle Post University at 3:00 p.m.
