#2 Baseball Opens Super Regional with Win Against #1 SNHU; Series Even at One

Manchester, N.H. – The second seeded Molloy baseball team split a doubleheader with the top-seeded Southern New Hampshire Penmen, 6-5 a
nd 5-7, Friday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
 
Game One: Molloy 6, SNHU 5
  • The Lions struck first, plating two runs off a throwing error to take a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
  • In the top of the fourth, graduate student Peter Theodorellis doubled into right center field that scored senior Vincent Pecora to push the Lions ahead, 3-0.
  • The Penmen responded in the bottom of the frame, with an RBI double to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, after four innings of action.
  • The maroon and white put together a two-run fifth inning. Sophomore Chris Einemann drove a two-run double down the right field line that brought home sophomore Garrett Scavelli, and senior Robby Keane scored senior Patrick Hoffman off an RBI ground out to extend the advantage to 5-1.
  • Southern New Hampshire cut the deficit to, 5-2, following a solo home run from Danniel Rivera in the bottom of the fifth.
  • With one out and nobody on base in the top of the sixth, redshirt senior Thomas Brady blasted a solo home run over the right field fence to reestablish the four-run lead, 6-2.
  • The Penmen added a run in the bottom of the sixth following a solo home run from Nick Schwartz to cut the lead to, 6-3.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Ricky Jimenez belted a two-run home run to cut the Molloy advantage to one, 6-5, but that was as close as they would come as graduate student Brian Morrisey recorded his fifth save of the season to put Molloy up, 1-0 in the best-of-three series.
  • Junior Charlie Cucchiara went seven innings allowing five hits, three runs, and three strikeouts to improve to 8-1 on the campaign.
Game Two: Molloy 5, SNHU 7
  • Southern New Hampshire totaled three runs in the top of the first inning off a pair of doubles to take a 3-0 lead.
  • In the second, the Penmen added to its lead with a sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the second, senior Patrick Hoffman smoked a two-run home run to cut the lead in half, 4-2, after two innings of baseball.
  • The Penmen pushed its lead to three, 5-2, following an RBI single in the top of the fifth.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Molloy tacked on three runs to knot the contest at five. Theodorellis singled home Einemann and Pecora came around to score following an error from the right fielder, and Theodorellis scored to cap the three-run inning following an error from the third baseman.
  • Southern New Hampshire scored a run in the sixth and seventh to extend its lead to 7-5.
  • The Lions threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but SNHU was able to hold the lineup scoreless and hold on to win, 7-5.
  • Graduate student Mike Andreoli pitched five innings allowing eight hits, six runs, five earned, and five strikeouts.
  • Redshirt freshman Connor Huckemeyer threw three innings in relief and allowed one run.
Up Next
The Lions will take on Southern New Hampshire tomorrow, May 28 in a winner take all game for the right to go to the College World Series. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
