Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, 6-9 and 12-2, Saturday afternoon on senior day at Bob Klein Field. The Lions moved to 20-25 overall and 10-8 in ECC play, while the Purple Knights moved to 26-13 overall and 14-6 in conference play.
Game One: Molloy 6, Bridgeport 9
- Bridgeport plated a run in the first inning and two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings of play.
- In the bottom of the third, graduate student Courtney Greene blasted a two-run home run over the left-field fence to cut the deficit to two, 3-2.
- The Purple Knights totaled four runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 7-2.
- The Lions answered in the bottom of the frame, freshman Cheralyn Dusharme scored off an error, and junior Steph Conrade and senior Alex Burns perfected a double steal to close the lead to three, 7-4, after six innings.
- The road team added two runs in the fifth, off an RBI single, and RBI ground out to retake its five-run lead, 9-4.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Dusharme drove in a run with an RBI ground out, and junior Akemi Poyer doubled down the right-field line to bring the Lions within three, 9-6. Molloy's comeback would fall short, as Bridgeport kept the Lions bats at bay to finish out the, 9-6 game.
Game Two: Molloy 12, Bridgeport 2
- The Purple Knights tallied two runs in the first to jump ahead 2-0.
- In the second, Dusharme hit an RBI single to left field to cut the away team's lead to 2-1.
- The maroon and white used a 10-run third inning to go ahead 11-2. Greene hit a two-RBI double, senior Marissa Nicoletti hit an RBI single, Dusharme hit a three-run home run, and junior Karsyn Eaton hit a two-RBI double down the left-field line.
- Dusharme added an RBI single in the fourth to extend the advantage to 12-2.
- In the circle, Amanda King pitched five innings, gave up two runs, on four hits, and struck out two to move to 11-11 on the season.
