Washington, D.C. – The Molloy women's lacrosse team won its second consecutive ECC matchup defeating UDC, 22-7, Saturday afternoon in the nation's capital. The Lions improve to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Firebirds fell to 0-8 and 0-2 in league play.
How it Happened
- 32 seconds into play Molloy held a 2-0 lead, following goals from senior Abbie Bellport and junior Amanda Weber.
- After three minutes of action, the Lions netted three more goals in less than a minute. Bellport, Weber, and junior Hailey Dazzo put Molloy ahead, 5-0, with under 11 minutes to play in the first quarter.
- UDC halted the Molloy attack with a goal to close the lead to four, 5-1, with 10:30 to play in the first quarter.
- Molloy concluded the first quarter with an eight-goal rally. Bellport and junior Joana Mauceri tallied a pair of goals each, Weber scored her third of the game, freshman Brenna Signorelli found the back of the net, and seniors Megan Schiaffo and Lucy Emptage capped the first quarter with goals apiece. The Lions led, 13-1, going into the second quarter.
- Down, but not out, UDC began the second quarter with four unanswered goals closing the deficit to eight, 13-5, with 4:21 to play in the first half.
- Bellport continued her career day with two goals to close the second quarter. Molloy led, 15-5, going into halftime.
- Coming out of the break, Weber tallied her fourth goal of the afternoon to push the road team ahead, 16-5.
- Mauceri, Shiaffo, senior Kara Rosenberg, and freshman Megan Rugolo added on to the scoring total in the third, Molloy held a, 20-5, lead with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- The Firebirds snapped the Lions scoring run with a goal, to bring the game within 14, 20-6, with three minutes left in the quarter.
- 2:11 into the fourth, freshman Nicole Calandra scored her first collegiate goal with a man-up, propelling Molloy ahead 21-6.
- Rugolo also tallied a goal with a man-up four minutes later. The maroon and white led, 22-6.
- The home team scored the final goal of the afternoon, with Molloy sealing the victory, 22-7.
Top Performances
- Bellport (six goals and two assists) and Schiaffo (two goals and six assists) totaled a career-high eight points apiece.
- Weber (four goals and one assist) tallied five points.
- Mauceri (three goals and one assist) added four points while picking up a game-high five ground balls.
- Rugolo (two goals and one assist) notched three points.
- Freshman Carly Howell caused a game-high three turnovers.
