Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team split a doubleheader with the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions lost the first game, 5-2, and won the second game, 9-8 in extra innings. The maroon and white moved to 19-7 overall and 5-1 in ECC play, while the Spartans moved to 10-14 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 2, STAC 5
- After a scoreless first inning, Molloy pulled ahead, 1-0, following a sacrifice fly from senior Patrick Hoffman, which scored sophomore Garrett Scavelli.
- STAC responded in the top of the third with an RBI single to tie the game at one.
- In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Scavelli tripled down the right-field line, which scored redshirt senior Thomas Brady. The Lions led, 2-1, after four innings of play.
- The Spartans scored consecutive runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 3-2 lead.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the maroon and white put runners on second and third looking to reclaim the lead. But the road team held the bats quiet. Molloy trailed, 3-2, after seven complete innings.
- The road team added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to pull ahead, 5-2.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Molloy was able to get the tying run to the plate, but was unable to convert, dropping the contest, 5-2.
- Graduate student Mike Andreoli threw seven innings while giving up three runs and four strikeouts.
Game Two: Molloy 9, STAC 8 F/8
- The visitors scored four runs in the first to go ahead 4-0.
- In the bottom of the first, Scavelli and junior David Franchi hit RBI singles to cut the advantage to 4-2.
- Scavelli hit a sac fly to left field, which scored Brady to make it 4-3 in the third.
- The Lions evened the score, 4-4, in the sixth. Senior Robby Keane hit a sac fly, which brought home sophomore Chris Einemann.
- After STAC took a 5-4 lead in the seventh, Hoffman hit an RBI single to knot the score, 5-5.
- The Spartans plated three runs in the eighth to regain an 8-5 advantage.
- In the bottom of the eighth, senior Vincent Pecora hit an RBI single to center, Brady hit a two-RBI double to left-center, and Franchi secured the win with a walk-off single to right-center.
- Senior Robert Lucano registered two outs in the eighth to improve to 2-0, and graduate student Billy Wildeman struck out seven batters in 6.1 innings pitched.
