Baseball Sweeps Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, 15-7, and 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improved to 24-10 overall and 10-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Purple Knights dropped to 14-21 overall and 5-7 in league play.
 
Game One: Molloy 15, Bridgeport 7
  • Bridgeport plated two runs in the top of the first to take an early, 2-0, lead.
  • Molloy answered in the following half inning, with two outs the Lions strung together three consecutive RBI singles off the bats of, senior Chris Peralta, junior David Franchi, and sophomore Garrett Scavelli to take a, 3-2 advantage after one inning of action.
  • Graduate student Matt Overton added an RBI single in the second to increase the lead to 4-2.
  • The Lions tacked on three runs in the third, graduate student Peter Theodorellis tripled home two runs, and Overton brought home his second RBI with a double down the left field line. Molloy led, 7-2, through three innings.
  • The Purple Knights fought back, scoring two runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to three, 7-4.
  • The maroon and white reclaimed its five-run lead, 9-4, off a pair of RBI singles from sophomore Chris Einemann and senior Robby Keane.
  • The away team kept the contest tight, with a two RBI ground-rule double in the fifth to shrink the lead to 9-6.
  • The home team tallied two runs in the seventh to push ahead, 11-6.
  • Molloy hung four runs in the eighth, Scavelli led off the inning with a solo home run, sophomore Anthony Manisero came in and hit a pinch-hit two-run home run, and Peralta smacked an RBI double down the left field line giving Molloy a, 15-6, advantage.
  • Bridgeport tallied a run in the ninth, to close the contest, 15-7, in favor of Molloy.
  • Graduate student Mike Andreoli pitched six innings allowing 12 hits, and six runs to improve to 7-2 on the season.
  • Redshirt freshman Connor Huckmeyer threw the last three innings allowing one hit, one run, none earned to collect his second save of the campaign. 
Game Two: Molloy 4, Bridgeport 3
  • The Purple Knights kicked off game two tallying two runs in the top of the first.
  • Molloy knotted the contest at two in the second, Franchi doubled to score redshirt senior Thomas Brady, and Einemann brought home Franchi with an RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Brady drove a single into left field that plated senior Vincent Pecora, pushing the Lions ahead, 3-2.
  • Bridgeport tied the contest, 3-3, in the top half of the sixth.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, following a double from senior Patrick Hoffman, sophomore Anthony Manisero pinch-ran for Hoffman and subsequently stole third to put himself 90 feet away from scoring, on the next pitch Pecora drove a fly ball to left that brought home Manisero to propel Molloy ahead, 4-3, where they would finish the contest.
  • Graduate student Billy Wildeman threw a complete game allowing five hits, allowed three runs, none earned, and struck out five to move to 5-1 on the season.
