King Throws Complete Game Shutout in Softball’s Split with STAC

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy softball team split a doubleheader with the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College Tuesday evening at Bob Klein Field. The Lions triumphed in game one, 6-0, and fell in game two, 6-2. The maroon and white moved to 15-18 overall and 7-5 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans moved to 17-14 overall and 10-2 in league play.
 
Game One: Molloy 6, STAC 0
  • Graduate student Courtney Greene brought home the game's first run, reaching on a fielder's choice to push Molloy ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first.
  • Later in the inning with the bases loaded, freshman Cherayln Dusharme ripped a bases clearing double down the left field line to extend the Lions lead to 4-0.
  • Junior Emma Bachman capped the first inning with a two-RBI double into left center field giving the home team a 6-0 lead after the first inning of play.
  • STAC looked to respond in the top of the third, but senior Amanda King would not allow it in the circle, striking out Jailene Santiago with two runners on to end the inning.
  • In the fifth, the Spartans put together another run scoring opportunity, but again, King held the Spartans off the scoreboard, inducing an inning ending ground out, to keep Molloy ahead for good, and take game one, 6-0.
  • King was dominate in the circle, pitching a complete game shutout, gave up six hits, and struck out five to improve to 6-9 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 2, STAC 6
  • Molloy started the second game quickly, senior Alex Burns tripled into right field and subsequently scored on a throwing error, to give Molloy an early, 1-0, lead at the end of the first inning.
  • In the following inning, with runners on first and third and two outs, Bachman placed down a perfect bunt that scored junior Karsyn Eaton giving Molloy a, 2-0, advantage through two innings of play.
  • In the top half of the third, the Spartans tied the contest at two, following an RBI single and sacrifice fly.
  • The game was knotted at two up until the sixth, STAC shortstop Nicolette MacDonald broke the tie with an two RBI single into center field, giving the road team its first lead of the afternoon, 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the frame, the maroon and white had the tying run on second with two outs, but the Spartans held Molloy off the scoreboard.
  • The road team added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 6-2 victory.
  • Junior Steph Conrade extended her hitting streak to 20 games.
