Amherst, N.Y. – The second-seeded women's basketball team led from wire-to-wire to defeat third-seeded Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, 71-44, Saturday afternoon inside Lumsden Gymnasium. The victory secures the Lions a spot in the East Coast Conference Championship game, where they will meet the first-seeded Daemen Wildcats.
How It Happened
- Molloy began the game on a 10-2 run, sparked by five points from junior Cameron Corbett, with 3:49 remaining in the first quarter.
- Corbett hit a running floater to beat the buzzer to end the opening stanza. Molloy led, 22-7, going into the second quarter.
- The maroon and white started the second quarter shooting 66 percent from the floor, rallying to a 13-2 run. Senior Gabriella Aspuru netted six points during the run, adding to the Lions lead, 24-7, with 3:04 remaining in the first half.
- Back-to-back threes from Corbett and sophomore Trinity Hudson closed the second quarter, giving Molloy a, 43-14, advantage heading into halftime.
- Coming out of the locker room, both teams traded baskets through the first five minutes, but a jumper from Aspuru put the Lions ahead, 53-23, with five minutes left in the third quarter.
- With three seconds remaining in the quarter, Aspuru hit a jump shot, giving Molloy a 31-point lead, 59-28, heading into the fourth.
- Halfway through the four quarter, graduate student Maya Thomas drained two consecutive three point baskets, to put the maroon and white ahead, 69-37, with 3:35 to play.
- Molloy went on to hold STAC to 33 percent shooting in the final quarter to close the game, 71-44.
Top Performances
- Corbett scored a career-high 19 points, shooting 73 percent from the floor, 2-of-3 from three-point range, and dished out a career-high 8 assists.
- Hudson recorded her eighth double-double of the season, netting 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
- Aspuru tallied 14 points on 66 percent shooting.
- Thomas added 11 points, while dishing out six assists and swiping two steals.
