#2 Women's Basketball Falls to #1 Daemen in ECC Final

Amherst, N.Y. – The second-seeded Molloy women's basketball team fell to the top-seeded Daemen Wildcats, 74-67, in the ECC Final Sunday at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Lions moved to 17-10.
 
How It Happened
  • Daemen began the game on a 8-0 scoring run with 6:44 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Following a timeout from head coach Joe Pellicane, the Lions put together a 10-4 rally, led by graduate student Maya Thomas, who hit two three-point baskets. Molloy trailed, 12-10, with under five minutes to go in the opening stanza.
  • The Wildcats closed the quarter on a 16-1 run, giving them a, 28-11, advantage going into the second quarter.
  • Graduate student Safiyyah Lee began the second with a layup, bringing the maroon and white within 15, 28-13, with 8:33 remaining in the first half.
  • The Lions trimmed the deficit to 10, 32-22, following a three from Thomas with under three minutes to go in the second quarter.
  • Molloy trailed, 35-22, heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the locker room, Daemen answered every basket the Lions made. The Wildcats held a, 48-34, lead with under four minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • The maroon and white closed the third quarter on an 11-5 run, closing the deficit to eight, 53-45, heading into the final quarter.
  • 2:22 into the fourth, back-to-back threes from Lee, junior Cameron Corbett, and a pair of foul shots from senior Gabriella Aspuru brought the Lions within two, 55-53.
  • Daemen responded with five consecutive points to regain a seven-point lead, 60-53, with over six minutes to play.
  • The Lions responded with five consecutive points of its own off baskets from Lee and Corbett, to bring the deficit back to two, 60-58, with under five minutes remaining.
  • Following a three from Daemen forward Katie Titus, Molloy knotted the game at 63, after a pair of foul shots from freshman Janel Moore, and a three from sophomore Trinity Hudson.
  • The Wildcats converted a three-point play, and Hudson followed with a made free-throw, bringing the Lions back within two, 66-64, with under two minutes left.
  • Daemen closed the contest on a 8-3 run, to seal the win, 74-67.
 
Top Performances
  • Corbett and Aspuru netted 14 points apiece and made four foul shots each.
  • Thomas tallied 13 points, made four threes, and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Lee added 10 points, shot 50 percent from the field, and brought down nine rebounds.
  • Moore scored 10 points, dished out five assists, and swiped three steals in 26 minutes off the bench.
  • Junior Cameron Corbett and graduate student Maya Thomas were named to the All-Tournament team.
