Softball Splits Doubleheader with Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. – The Molloy softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights Sunday afternoon at Seaside Park. The Lions fell in game one, 3-0, and triumphed in game two, 5-4. The maroon and white moved to 10-11 overall and 5-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Purple Knights moved to 13-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
 
Game One: Molloy 0, Bridgeport 3
  • Pitching on both sides dominated the first two innings of play, as senior Amanda King and Bridgeport pitcher Katie Burawski kept the game knotted at zero after two innings of play.
  • The Purple Knights took advantage of its opportunity in the bottom of the third, hitting a three-run home run to lead 3-0.
  • Molloy threatened in the fourth with two base runners, but they were left stranded on the basepath.
  • Junior Karsyn Eaton singled in the fifth, but was not able to score. Bridgeport kept the Lions' bats quiet for the remainder of the contest to win, 3-0.
  • King threw a complete game and allowed three runs, zero earned, and struck out three batters.
 
Game Two: Molloy 5, Bridgeport 4
  • Graduate student Courtney Greene entered the circle for game two and held Bridgeport scoreless through the first two innings of play.
  • In the bottom half of the third, the Purple Knights struck for four runs, an infield single plated the first run of the contest and was followed up by a three-run home run to push the home team ahead, 4-0.
  • Molloy did its damage in the following half inning. Junior Steph Conrade tripled to score junior Akemi Poyer, Conrade then scored following a wild pitch, senior Alex Burns, and sophomore Katie Hand each blasted two-run home runs apiece to push Molloy in the lead, 5-4.
  • Greene held off the Purple Knights rally in the bottom of the seventh to seal the game, 5-4.
  • Green pitched a complete game and allowed four runs, on nine hits, and whiffed five batters to move to 6-5 on the season.
 
Up Next
Molloy returns home Tuesday, March 29 to host Felician at Bob Klein Field. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
