Washington, D.C. – The Molloy men's lacrosse team defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 17-7, Saturday afternoon in its ECC-Opener. The Lions improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in ECC play, while the Firebirds moved to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
How it Happened
- Senior Brian Ford tallied the first three goals of the contest to put Molloy ahead 3-0.
- UDC netted the next two, and the Lions led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
- Freshman Robert Gazzano and graduate student Nick Del Giorno found the back of the net for the maroon and white, which led 5-4 at the half.
- The Lions started the third stanza on a 5-0 run, sparked by two goals from sophomore Chris Delaney, to take a 10-4 advantage. The away team led 10-5 at the end of 45 minutes of play.
- Delaney, Gazzano, and Del Giorno scored to start the fourth and made it 13-5.
- With the score 13-6, the maroon and white ended the game on a 4-1 rally en route to a 17-7 victory.
Top Performances
- Junior Ryan Downing (two goals and three assists) and Del Giorno (three goals and two assists) recorded a match-high five points each.
- Delaney tallied three goals and one assist, and add seven ground balls.
- Gazzano (three goals), Ford (three goals), and junior Sean Plasencia (three assists) registered three points apiece.
- Junior Edward McCannIV caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
- Freshman Christian Michaels made 17 saves.
