Rockville Centre, N.Y. – A three-pointer from senior
Gabriella Aspuru with 11 seconds remaining in the game lifted the Molloy women's basketball team over the Saint Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 53-52, Wednesday night at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 12-8 on the season and 9-4 in ECC play, while the Spartans fell to 8-14 and 7-6 in the ECC.
How it Happened
- After falling behind 4-0 in the opening minutes, Aspuru sparked an 8-0 run for Molloy, giving the Lions the early lead.
- Back-to-back Spartan three-pointers by Alexa Huertas and Erin Leary gave STAC a 10-8 lead. STAC led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter.
- After exchanging baskets to open the second frame, back-to-back three pointers from graduate student Maya Thomas and Aspuru gave Molloy a 23-18 lead halfway through the second frame.
- Liliana Kramer ended the Molloy run and sparked a 6-2 run for STAC to close the quarter with Molloy ahead 26-24.
- The two sides traded baskets throughout the entire third quarter with the Spartans taking a slight 13-12 point advantage in the quarter.
- With the game tied at 43-43 with 6:37 remaining, STAC embarked on a 5-0 run, taking a 48-43 lead with 4:46 left and forcing a Molloy timeout.
- Aspuru scored the next four points of the game, bringing the Lions within one with 3:47 to play.
- A free throw from Julia Reggio gave the Spartans a two-point advantage before Aspuru tied up the game at 49-49 with 1:37 remaining.
- After a foul by STAC put Molloy at the line with 47 seconds left. Janel Moore missed the opening attempt but converted the second, giving the Lions a 50-49 lead.
- Following a timeout by the Spartans, Huertas hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds to go, giving the lead back to STAC at 52-50.
- Aspuru answered the call once again for Molloy, hitting a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining and giving Molloy back the lead at 53-52.
- With a chance to win chance, Sarah Ericson's jumper was blocked by Thomas as Molloy came away with a 53-52 victory.

- Aspuru led all scorers with 21 points while grabbing eight rebounds and two blocks.
- Thomas netted 12 points with six rebounds.
- Junior Cameron Corbett tallied 11 points with four assists.
- Sophomore Trinity Hudson led the maroon and white with nine rebounds while graduate student Safiyyah Lee put up seven boards, seven points, and two blocks.
