Sparkill, N.Y. – The men's basketball team fell to the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College this evening, 104-92. The Lions drop to 7-14 (6-6 ECC), while STAC improves to 17-4 (10-1 ECC) with the win.
How it Happened
- The home took an early 11-2 advantage 2:47 into the contest.
- Molloy answered with a 9-0 run, highlighted by five points from senior Steven Torre, to knot the score at 11 with 13:57 left in the opening stanza.
- A pair of three-point baskets from Torre and junior Frankie Phelan brought the Lions within three, 23-20, with over nine minutes to play.
- Three minutes later, Torre hit a jump shot to give the road team its first lead of the game, 30-28, with 5:49 left on the scoreboard.
- The Spartans regained the lead, 38-34, following three consecutive layups with under three minutes remaining.
- Freshman Darren Fergus drained a three to close the deficit to two, 40-38, with 1:44 to go.
- St. Thomas Aquinas closed the half on a 9-4 run. Molloy trailed 49-42 heading into the break.
- The Lions came out of the locker room and put together an 18-8 scoring run to take a three point lead, 60-57, with 15:23 to go.
- A dunk from Spartans' guard Elijah Bovell was answered by freshman Kenny Lazo, who drilled a three to knot the contest at 66, with 12:28 remaining in the second half.
- A 7-0 run from St. Thomas Aquinas propelled the Spartans in front, 73-66, with under 11 minutes left on the scoreboard.
- Fergus hit a jump shot to end the scoring run to bring Molloy within five, 73-68.
- The home team opened up a 12 point lead, 80-68, with 7:46 to play.
- The maroon and white compiled a 7-0 run, led by four points from redshirt sophomore Kendell Ogilvie to cut the deficit to five, 80-75, with over six minutes left.
- The Spartans opened its largest lead of the game 100-83 over the course of the next four minutes of action.
- A layup from Fergus brought Molloy within 10, 100-90, but the Spartans held off the Lions in the final 1:15 to close out the 104-92 victory.
